You could say that being a DJ was ingrained into Josh’s DNA, having grown up around DJs spinning vinyls, it was almost fitting he wanted to do the same. Having been in the house scene on the Gold Coast and Sydney for over 10 years, Josh discovered early in his career that he wanted to make his own tracks and create his own unique sounds. This led Josh into the world of producing, where he has been making huge waves globally, with his tracks smashing the Hypeddit charts, coming in at number 1! As a producer Josh shows no signs that he is slowing down!!!
Come with me as we step Behind The Decks with Joshrox
Everyone has that one thing that made them want to start spinning decks, for you what inspired you to start DJing, and who were your early influences?
From an early age of 12 I was listening to funky house music (sounds from late 90’s to around 2004). Influences would definitely be my dad and a house full of extremely technical vinyl DJ’s where weekends were filled with Sydney gigs and break of dawn house parties in those following years. My big act influences in that era were the likes Ian Carey, Freemasons, Warren Clarke, David Penn, Kid Creme & Axwell.
What is the best Joshrox moment you have had to date?
I’ve had many great moments over my Dj’ing and producing career. A highlight would have been playing with La Fiesta Sound System (DJ Band) for Hed Kandi New Year’s 2009 at the Wollongong hotel in NSW. We played a 3 hour main set in front of 3000 crazy party goers. The vibe was amazing, we tore the place apart and it was an awesome experience.
You have had success having EPs signed by labels which is already an EPIC achievement, talk us through this, what is the process to get to this level, do you now feel like your beginning to make it?
Long hours, hard work, dedication and a resilience to chase echoes of no responses. It’s a tough gig, you can’t give up! In terms of the process I find myself really studying a label between their current releases & their biggest releases to date. I’ll focus & spend a lot of time in my studio creating unique tracks to align with a particular label I’m targeting similar to my sound. Getting signed up to international labels is an awesome feeling, getting a big official hit will be the next. I feel like I'm definitely in the right direction.
Your latest track “I see you” has already had 11.6K streams on Soundcloud, is it surreal knowing so many people are loving your music?
“I see you” was officially released with 3000 Bass in the UK. They have a huge following which is up to their followers if they like the tune or not. It had a great response, was an awesome feeling to get so much love & some good reactions, it’s really inspired me produce more!
What have been some of your main challenges and goals when starting out as a DJ/producer and how have they changed as you’ve progressed?
Starting at the bottom in a saturated competitive space as a DJ is super tough. Lots of ego, tight circles and bloody good talent all make it challenging at the start. Overcoming limiting beliefs, peer pressure, work life balance and financial commitments add to the mix. You just got to want it bad enough and chase it like a mother fucker. I don't believe it’s changed as I’ve progressed, it’s just a different playing field and still requires the energy and effort to make shit happen!
You recently started your radio show “Basses Loaded” on Gold Coast station 105.7 Radio Metro, what has this meant to you?
Was definitely a huge achievement. Felt absolutely surreal. Being signed up to Australia’s biggest dance music radio station was definitely on my vision board. The crew are awesome, I love the vibe at the station and it’s my kind of tribe! It’s given me a world of opportunity as a DJ & Producer. Can’t wait to see what the future holds.
You class yourself and a House & dirty Bass DJ, having listened to your latest Basses Loaded radio show, it has a bit of everything. Would you say that this is still your style or do you see it evolving?
A house & dirty Bass DJ definitely. My sound can be anything from commercial bass house to something completely underground that’s seldom heard. A lot of those tracks in Basses Loaded are unreleased which keeps it interesting. Evolving yes, bass music is forever evolving. I’d say it’s one of the biggest genres in the scene at the moment and I’m stoked to be part of this particular sound.
What is something that you bothers you about the DJ scene?
Ego still gets in the way which is a real shame, I like being the humble DJ/Producer bringing peace and love everywhere I go. Shame about lockout laws in certain states and lack of support for festivals, which can make you drag your feet as a DJ at times.
What is that one track that makes you just want to throw down when you hear it?
I’d say one of Chris Lorenzo’s new tune - Bad Bitch ft Chyna. Between the riff, drums, bassline sounds & vocal just reminds of some cool kid with his hat back not giving a shit having a good time. Every time I mix that track I get goose bumps.
As an up-and-coming local act, where would you love to play the most, what is your ultimate?
Coming out of the studio now & getting back on the decks, I’d say the Met in Brisbane’s party scene playing Bass music as that’s my crowd. My most ultimate gig I want to play at is both EDC & Night Bass event.
You are extremely passionate about Djing and making music, what can we expect from you in the months to come?
Some wicked new releases between originals & remixes. Definitely some club sets. Some awesome live sets on 105.7 Radio Metro. Watch this space!
And finally, we ask everyone the same closing question. What is the craziest thing you have seen from behind the decks?
Was doing a private function in a mansion in Sydney who were all in the stripper scene. They all stripped off and the dance floor was covered in hot naked women all into each other for the rest of the party.
Totally unexpected, totally wild. First time ever I skipped a beat or two.
