Lowdown is relatively new on the scene, only coming out in 2017. However, the man behind the name is one of the most well-known names on the local scene. If you are as old as me, you will know the name, Paul Daluxx; Paul has been playing clubs and filling dance floors for years, playing the biggest clubs of the time including Family, Monastery, Platnum, Chinese Laundry, Home and his resident club The Met.
Since launching his new alias Lowdown we have seen him go from strength to strength, getting playouts all over the world. I got to catch up with Paul to talk about the year that was and what's coming up in 2020.
Come with me as I step Behind The Decks with Lowdown.
I remember going to see you play at Family and Monastry back in the day, how have you seen the scene change over the years?
A lot has changed gradually over the years, with the music and punters being the obvious changes. But now that there are a lot more DJ’s, it’s put the scene in a bit of a strange place. Paying your dues doesn’t seem to be as important anymore. However, there are some really passionate kids emerging so that’s a big positive.
With the changes of the music scene over the years, have you found your music and your own self evolving with the scene?
As a DJ I’ve found it imperative to adapt with each wave if you want to keep getting work. As an artist, I’ve been on a bit more of a discovery path over the years which has led me to the Lowdown project.
In 2017 you launched your alias/side project Lowdown, tell us what lead to the launch of Lowdown?
Before I started Lowdown I was finding my feet as a producer and trying several different styles. Eventually, I finally felt confident enough to go in a new direction and stick with it. This was right around the time that Tchami launched his Confession label and house music was beginning to get really experimental.
How does it feel getting support this year from the likes of Martin Garrix, Fedde Le Grand and Bingo Players?
It’s always really inspiring to see support coming in from artists I’ve listened to over the years. That’s when you know you’re making decent records.
Your track "Breakout" was a HUGE success this summer getting played at Tomorrowland, Ultra Europe, Ultra Miami and EDC. When you created it did you think it would be such an EPIC track?
I’d be lying if I said no. I make every track with the intention of receiving major support so while it was a pleasant feeling to see it continually played around the world, that was always the goal.
You recently played at Oceania Electronica at ADE, what was that experience like?
Oceania was great. It was so good to have all the Aussies there along with many of my international supporters whom I’d never had the privilege of meeting until then.
What was the best moment in 2019 for you?
Going on stage at the Confession party in Amsterdam was pretty special. I got to play a couple of tracks alongside Tchami, Malaa, Mercer, Ibranovski, Maximono and Kage.
What are your BIG goals for 2020?
I like to keep my goals to myself but I will say that I’m currently working on making it over to the US to play. It’d be a dream come true to tour there and meet the fans.
We ask all our Artist the same closing question, what’s the craziest thing you have seen from behind the decks?
I wasn’t behind the decks at the time but I saw a guy crowd surf on a sofa.
Lowdown is one of my MUST WATCH in 2020, I think this is going to be his year!! Make sure you follow him on his socials for all his shows and new music!
