Lucas & Steve are one of the most electrifying duos on the scene right now. With a stage presence beyond their years, they bring an energy that is unmatched to their sets. Their tracks are uplifting with beautiful vocals, spine-tingling drops and their production level is second to none. It is this combination that has seen the dutch duo play main stages all over the world and collaborate with some of the biggest names in the industry.
Come with me as we step Behind The Decks with Lucas & Steve
You two became friends when you were teenagers and now work together and basically live together on tour, what habits do you each have that annoys the other?
Good question! If we don't get enough sleep while on tour we become very annoying to not only each other but, the whole team. We both really struggle when we don't have enough sleep and we are not our normal selves, which is hard for everyone.
2016 to now has been one hell of a ride for you two, the release of tracks like “Summer On You”, “Feel Alive’ and “Let’s Go” saw you playing main stages all over the globe. Was there a moment or a booking that made you both think “WOW, we made it?”
We’ve got so many dreams and goals we want to achieve, we have been really lucky and have already achieved a few. Playing at the main stage of Tomorrowland was a BIG ONE. When we reach our goals we then tend to start chasing our new goals right away.
Your music is gaining support from all over the world, you even took the stage with Armin Van Buuren last year for what has been a massive collaboration “Don’t Give Up On Me”. What was the journey like culminating in sharing the stage with Armin at Ultra?
Playing at Ultra was a dream for us, we’ve been to Miami Music Week many times, but this was the first time playing at Ultra. This was a really fun way to premiere our collab on the main stage at Ultra with Armin.
This year saw you step off the main stage at Tomorrowland and on to 2 of the biggest side stages. Do you feel you have a bit more freedom in what you play on the side stages and are people a lot crazier?
The main stage is super cool, but in 2019 we had a lot of fun at the side stages. The atmosphere is more intimate and the people go nuts; you can connect far more with the crowd which gives us more energy to go harder and them more energy to go CRAZY!
You just hosted your biggest solo sold-out show to date at ADE, how incredibly proud do you feel having achieved this, especially in your home country?
We’re extremely proud that we sold out our Skyline Sessions ADE edition for the third year in a row. It’s so nice to see that there are people from around the globe coming to our ADE show. We would like to bring the concept to other countries, so keep an eye on our socials ;-)
What was your biggest career accomplishment in 2019?
1) Sold-out Skyline Sessions show for the 3rd time during ADE
2) Launch our new producer platform on our website www.lucasandsteve.com
3) Our music, among others a collab with Armin van Buuren and W&W.
4) Club tour Japan, 5 sold-out shows in 3 days.
5) Gigs at the most beautiful festivals in the world.
You have 2 sets coming up at Tomorrowland winter, do you guys actually like the cold?! What challenges do you face playing in the winter festival?
Hahaha, one of the worst things is the wind, it freezes your ears, we are lucky enough that we’ve got our headphones to keep them warm.
This week you have reached 150 episodes of Skyline sessions, congratulations!
Could there be a Skyline Session Imprint/label anytime soon?
Definitely thinking about starting our own imprint, but first things first...Right now we’re busy with finalizing our album for 2020 :-)
You have some upcoming dates in Asia and Japan, would you consider coming down to Australia in the future? We would love to have you!
We hope to come to Australia ASAP, we have never been there before and we can’t wait to party with you!
You guys have had a highly successful 2019, what’s coming up in 2020 for Lucas & Steve?
A lot is coming! We have a lot of new music ready to be released, we will release something very special in 2020.
So keep an eye on our socials :) and of course, we hope to see you in Australia in 2020!
We close all our interviews with the same question, what’s the craziest thing you have seen
from behind the decks?
Good question.. hahaha, the best thing we see is people going nuts for our music haha! We love playing to crazy crowds!
Having followed Lucas & Steve for some years now it was great to get the chance to chat with the boys and see how far they have come. One thing is apparent is their love for not only what they do but what they create. I added a question about their massive track "Adagio for Strings" referencing the Tiesto version and if they felt any pressure taking on a remix of there own. Many artists would simply answer the questions and moved on, however, Lucas and Steve responded very politely saying that their version was, in fact, an original and I should remove the question. We here at BTD also love what we do and we LOVE this answer as it shows passion and love for what they do. It speaks volumes about them as artists and shows why they have come so far.
If you have never seen Lucas & Steve perform, watch the video below of there Tomorrowland W1 2019 set. This was many of the BTD staff favourite set of the weekend!
We can not wait to see what 2020 brings for them and who knows we might see them down under before we know it!
