Mason has only been in the electronic music scene for a few short years, first stepping behind the decks in 2017. Within that time he has become one of the top Tech House DJs on the local scene and booking shows all across the state. He has big plans for the rest of 2020 including dropping his first original track!

**Now we have to preface our interview with Mason by saying we completed this pre-COVID-19, a lot of Mason's answers speak from a place when we weren't in a lockdown. We are sure that post-lockdown, these goals will be achieved!**

Come with me as I step behind the decks with Mason Maffick.

Where did your passion for music come from?

It really came at an early age as my mum exposed me to so much music including AC/DC, Metallica, The Beatles, etc. but while she was playing that she would also throw in some Ministry of Sound and Wild mixes to give me a real diverse range. Through school, I was a drummer and that’s where I really found my stride in the industry as I was doing lots of backing drumming and season drumming for a range of bands.

What made you decide to become a DJ?

When I moved to Brisbane I was living in share houses and with mates and I could not really fit in a drum kit into my bedroom hahaha I still had a passion for the industry and that when I really found Electronic music and got my first set of shitty SP1 (Decks) hahaha man I loved those things.

What steps did you take to create your first track?

Man, I am still so fresh when it comes to making music, however, I sat down and started with the percussion, but I realised I had no other clue about making a track. So I stopped and went away for a few weeks and just researched how to make an electronic music track. I dived into all the theory behind it, and then I went back and did the base, drop, etc and I do all my mixes on Ableton 10

You are a busy man at the moment, starting a podcast, Djing and running some events. Where do you find the time and focus for it all?

Honestly, I hit a bit of a low point with my energy levels of late as I was parting a bit hard so I have started a sober month to focus down on what I really want. It’s so easy in our industry to just go out to work and then party every weekend, but now I am really trying to plan my partying a little more and focus on making music and my sets.

What’s one bit of advice you have for up and coming DJs that you wish you were given?

Oh, good question! I have 2 bits that come to mind:

1) If you are passionate about F-Ing comment

2) Don’t let the seriousness of your passion make what you are doing less fun.

Basically plan your kickons hahaha

What are some big goals you have for 2020?

1) I am keen to step up my sets and get to play a festival/bigger event.

2) Play interstate

3) Get regular releases dropping and have 2 original tracks out.

What’s coming up for you and your plan for world domination?

I want to start promoting the local scene more with hosting and running some events based around up and coming acts and giving them a place to express their talents. I am not far from graduating Uni as a teacher and I want to start trying to get electronic music production into schools.

We close all our interviews the same way, what’s the craziest thing you have seen from behind the decks?

Oh, bro, I have a few, I was playing Coco at The Met, it was 3am and I was watching this really hammered guy trying to dance. Out of nowhere he just stopped and started touching his face, then a strobe lit his face up and I could not believe what I was seeing. This guy had bitten through his lip and a tooth was clean through his lip. I thought I was seeing things then the lights lit up again and yep the tooth was clean through his lip. This guy was so hammered he did not even know what was happening, he just kept touching his face and chest thinking “why am I wet” as blood pissed out everywhere.

The other one was Patrick Topping was playing a set and he had been at a festival on the Gold Coast all day and then came to The Met so he had enjoyed a few sherberts that day. I was standing there watching him when out of nowhere he grabs and a box of Oak Chocolate milk from under the decks. He opens it and just smashes the whole thing down and then goes back to his vodka lime and soda haha

Make sure you catch Mason playing on the Live Stream at Sub Rosa Tech House night this Saturday night.
