Having burst into the scene in 2018 though Brisbane's YourShot DJ competition with no DJ experience, just simply a love for the music, Wavelink are proving that sometimes all you need is someone to believe and give you that first shot. Following their first encounter with those decks, Nick and Tayla have not slowed down. From Mixmaster competitions to battle of the DJ’s shows, they are showing the world just how much they can achieve together. We caught up with this fast emerging Gold Coast duo to talk all things Wavelink.
Come with me as I Step Behind The Decks with Wavelink
What made you decide that you were going to DJ together? Was it something that you both were interested in?
We had been talking about it for months prior, but at Falls 2017 we decided to go all-in and form our duo. We had no name, no idea where we wanted to take it or what was going to come out of it. All we knew is that we both had a love for music and that we were ready to give it our best shot.
I’d love to know where you came up with the name Wavelink, what is the story behind it?
The name actually came to Tayla in a dream. It was envisioned on a festival lineup with Wavelink being the headliners. There’s still a note in Tayla’s phone with a timestamp of 2:57am when she had the dream because she didn’t want to forget it.
Prior to competing in the 2018 YourShot DJ competition, what experience did you both have in both music and DJing? Did this help pave the way to where you are today?
We knew absolutely nothing! YourShot was probably the best thing we’ve decided to do. Not only did it teach us the basics of everything we needed to know, it taught us how to work and understand one another.
2019 saw you compete in the Radio Metro’s Mix Master DJ competition. I watched you guys play that day and the energy you both brought was insane. Being a duo, what traits have you learnt about each other, that has helped build energy into your sets?
We both know each other so well now after working so closely together. We are able to read one another and know what needs to be done in terms of delivering the best set possible to the crowd. Whether we play to 500 people or 5 people we will ALWAYS bring the same high energy no matter what. The end goal for a Wavelink set is to have as much fun as possible and hope the crowd does too.
Following the Mix Master competition, Wavelink scored their very own DJ show, THE SONOSTREAM, on 105.7 Radio Metro. How does it feel knowing what you create is now being broadcasted around Australia?
It still feels so surreal, it’s crazy to think we have our own radio show and that people from all around Australia can tune in to us. The crew at Radio Metro have been so good to us, we’re forever thankful to have this opportunity with them and can’t wait for what the future holds.
You have been producing edits and mashups with your signature Bass-House sound for some time now, what is next to come for Wavelink? Can we hope to see you producing your own tracks in the future?
The edit pack we put out was a hit, but we thought it was time to start focusing on our own sound and where we want to go with it. We’ve really been using the last few months to our advantage and working on a lot of production. Our goal within the next year is to have an EP out as well as a few other bits and pieces.
Wavelink is fast becoming a big name in both Brisbane & on the Gold Coast, what was the breakout moment for you where you thought “finally, we're doing something right?!"?
Our breakout moment would have to be when we got a late call up to Woolly Mammoth. The whole venue was packed out and we ended up playing an extended set which then led to a weekly residency. That night was hands down one of the best sets we’ve had to date.
Congratulations on winning “Battle of the DJ’s” at Revolution Nightclub in April! Competing in DJ comps is something we see you do often, what kind of exposure has that given you by giving these events a go?
Thank you, we were stoked to take away the win! Competing in these competitions can be super scary but we wouldn’t be where we are without them. Through these competitions is how we have made some of the most important connections with other DJ’s and people within the industry.
Now for a bit of fun (my favourite part!)
Post COVID-19 you win $1 million dollars, what is the first thing that you do or buy?
We would pack up and move to LA, invest in some very cool instruments and equipment. Most importantly though, we’d throw a huge house party!
Which of you has the most annoying habit and what is it?
Nick has a TERRIBLE habit of leaving USB’s at clubs. I’d say he’s probably lost 20 in the short time we’ve been playing gigs.
If we were to play a game of Kiss one, Mary one, Go to a festival with one, who would you each choose?
Tayla - Would 100% go to a festival with Sir Bob from The Bloody Beetroots, I would kiss Jordan Burns and without a doubt marry Godlands.
Nick - Hands down would go to a festival with the king himself Golden Features, would kiss Lucille Croft, Marry Tash Sultana in a heartbeat.
And finally, we ask everyone the same closing question. What is the craziest thing you have seen from behind the decks?
This one was tricky! Not to name names but when we played down in Ballina one night, it got a little messy, and the DJ before us got butt naked chugging a VB. It later led to him getting thrown out. That would by far be the craziest/weirdest thing we’ve come across.
If you ever needed something new, exciting and full of banging tracks to listen to, then look no further than Wavelink. I have seen them perform in person and they absolutely tore the place apart. What they have built together in such a short amount of time is just incredible. I cannot wait to follow them on their journey post COVID, as they are someone that you need to watch out for. Make sure that you get around our local talent and give them a follow on their socials, Soundcloud and tune into 105.7 Radio Metro for their weekly radio show.
