G.RIDAZ may seem like two fresh baby faced boys but they are fast making a name for themselves both on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. G.RIDAZ first emerged into the scene as a 2019 entry in Brisbane’s YourShot DJ competition. The boys recently entered a DJ competition where they were among 100 entries that battled it out for the top spot and WON! This scored them a residency at the Ivory Tusk and Club 253 in Brisbane.
Developing a love for being behind the decks they soon went on a mission to make themselves known! Having now played shows for influences like Em Davies and are upcoming support for international artist, Witty Boy, they are just getting better and better.
They are now regulars on the line up for the Gold Coast Revolution Nightclub which is where I first saw them play. Watching them and the energy they brought, I instantly knew they had something special. They work the crowd in a way that brought a smile to my face and you could just see they were having the time of their lives. Following the set, I initially approached them to tell them how sick it was as I love nothing more than someone's true passion shining and boy do these boys bring that
Come with me as I step Behind The Decks with G.RIDAZ
You are both quite young and fresh on the scene. What inspired you guys to pursue DJing?
We both share a passion for music and obviously being young, we love to party and have a good time with our mates. We are both quite outgoing people and we love to see other people have a good time so we saw DJing complimented this perfectly as we could do both!
Take us through the journey of how G.RIDAZ was formed?
We were really good mates and we’re already DJing at house parties for friends but nothing too major. We decided to have a mix together and just clicked instantly. We were both self-taught DJ’s having spent hours watching YouTube videos and teaching each other things along the way. Eventually, we decided to do a couple of sets as a duo to test it out and we worked well together. Not only that we found we had a better time doing it with one another and we could hype the crowd up more which made for a better night and better vibes all round. We barely remember our first gig we played together and believe therefore we are so suited as it was so natural. Since then we haven’t looked back.
The DJ name you both chose is really unique. Was it a joint discovery or nickname, where did you come up with it?
To be honest, there wasn’t a huge thought process that went into the name, we just sat down, got drunk and eventually came to G.RIDAZ. There were many other names thrown around but we decided it was short, sweet and sounded cool. Hopefully one day it’ll be known worldwide.
Being a duo, how does performing together go? What preparations do you make prior to a set to ensure that you both are on point?
People probably don’t realise it, but performing as a duo is quite difficult and you need to know what the other person is thinking at any given time. As we’ve basically learnt and played together over the space of 2-3 years we have become very good at knowing what one another is thinking. Due to us knowing one another so well, we don’t have anything major we do when it comes to preparing for a set, unless we want to add some super technical elements to our set. We get together a couple times a week to find some new tracks, effects and new techniques we can throw into our upcoming sets.
What has been the highlight over the past year for G.RIDAZ and what can we expect to see from you over this year?
Our biggest highlight would have to be winning the Woolly Mammoth DJ competition and scoring residences at Woolly Mammoth, Club 253 and Revolution Nightclub. Moving from the house party scene into clubs is a massive high. Your Shot was also a HUGE highlight and one of our most hype sets we’ve played to date which was SICK.
This year you competed in the Brisbane YOUR SHOT DJ competition as a duo, what was the experience like?
Your Shot 2019 was honestly such a good experience from start to finish. This was our first opportunity to play in a club environment. The journey was the best part; meeting people with similar goals, finessing our skills, watching a bunch of talented DJ’s and playing one of our best sets was just incredible and we’ll never forget it. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door. Would love to be involved in it again one day to mentor other DJ’s.
I've seen you absolutely hype up a crowd, what gets you both going to be able to project this type of energy?
We love the stage and always say that we go out with the intention of having the best time. Going out with that intention generally reflects on everyone and means the crowd too will have a good time. As we said we are both outgoing and love to be the reason that people in the crowd are enjoying themselves, so we put 110% into every set. We also love to get on the mic as it just hypes the crowd up even more.
Now for the fun questions. You are stuck in a room where there is only one genre of music playing on loop. What genre do you choose and what song would you add to the playlist?
Bailey- This is such a hard question because I listen to such a wide variety of music. If I was in the mood to party it would have to be Bass House with any tracks by artists like Wax Motif, Tchami or Lowdown. One of my favourite Bass house tracks would have to be 6am by Lowdown & Lozz. Normally, however, I just listen to more Hip-Hop tracks and get around artists like J-Cole, Matt Corman and The Kid Laroi.
Tommy- I also listen to quite a range of different music genres. My favourite genre to play is bass house, and it’s scary how similar our music taste is. It’s hard to pick a favourite track because we are always finding new music day-to-day, but anything from Tchami’s Confession Label.
Do you keep the sauce in the fridge or cupboard? I am totally a keep in the cupboard till it's opened then move to the fridge type of girl, so answer wisely!
Bailey- Yeah I’m with you on that one 100%. It literally says on the bottle refrigerate after opening!
Tommy- No, definitely the pantry and pantry only!
If you both woke up tomorrow and had somehow won the lotto, what is the first thing that you would buy?
Bailey- Good question, Ummm I would probably buy a Jetski or a fresh 4wd.
Tommy- I’d probably buy a mint house that we could both live at.
Back to some serious business, what’s next in 2020 for you boys?!
We have a lot of cool gigs coming up soon, including supporting our first international artist, WittyBoy which is exciting. There are a lot more which are currently in talks, including supporting a couple bigger name international artists, so stay tuned!! We have just signed with an agency and another exciting piece of news is that we are currently in the process of creating our first track to be released in the next couple of months. We also want to land our first festival gig and are pushing hard to make that happen.
And for our closing question, we ask all of our guests. What is the craziest thing you have seen from Behind The Decks?
Honestly, because we have come from a house party background, there isn’t a lot we haven’t seen. We’ve seen girls dancing topless, Mums giving lap dances, injuries while crowd surfing, fights, and girls completely snapping chairs while giving lap dances. There is quite a long list, to be honest, but these are a couple of the tamer ones. Also, nothing beats the one cooker that comes up to us asking to play some Hefs for the 4th time.
It was a pleasure to step Behind The Decks with these boys and to be able to witness first hand the energy they bring! We are excited to see what is next for the G.RIDAZ boys and to follow their journey, they are a duo you need to get around. Be sure to follow them on their socials to keep up to date with all things G.RIDAZ!
