Let’s go “Hard in Bangkok” with Yellow Claw and the Barong Family

Written by Kylie Vesey

In what could be one of the best making-of EP stories to date, Yellow Claw has finally released the much anticipated third instalment of Barong Family's "Hard in Bangkok" album.

Now you may be wondering where the title for the EP came from, right? I mean who wouldn’t want to go hard in Bangkok? Well in an awesome move, Yellow Claw rounded up 14 artists and set their sights on Bangkok. The EP and documentary series was recorded in Bangkok over 5 days and shows each artist share their own mini-documentary period, which is pretty cool.

Hard in Bangkok is a collaboration between 14 artists from the Barong Family label featuring Bellorum, Crisis Era, Dither, Ghoster, Juyen Sebulba, Lil Texas, LNY TNZ, Nonsens, Radical Redemption, Rawtek, RayRay, Sihk, Stoltenhoff, and of course Yellow Claw.

The opening track "Let There Be Bass" by Yellow Claw & Dither sets the tone of the album with a Hardstyle-influenced bass. This is a tone we see continue throughout the course of the EP, with songs like "Tuk Tuk Terror" and "Neon City," both by RayRay, which feature Dither and Bellorum, respectively. Nonsens & Rawtek's "Temple" incorporates both deep melodies and Hard Tech-House sounds. Whilst the tracks like "Spicy Curry" by Psycho Boys Club & Sihk are all hard-hitting mechanical synths and bass.

Each track on the EP has a unique sound, each differs from the next, intended to have listeners transported to a different place with each track. The naming of the tracks are heavily influenced by the region they were created in, proving that Yellow Claw really has a love for Asia.

It came as no surprise that the duo chose Asia as their destination; not only are Yellow Claw and the entire Barong Family widely renowned in Asia, but Jim (one half of Yellow Claw) is half Indonesian.
