Behind The Decks

‘Chromatica’ by Lady Gaga is out now, co-produced by some notable electronic music artists.

Written by Oliver Liwanag.

‘Chromatica’, Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album, dropped a few weeks ago to intense fanfare from Gaga stans across the globe. Having waited patiently with the postponement of the original release date due to COVID-19, Gaga’s ‘Little Monsters’ could finally let out a sigh of relief as when the album dropped on May 22. Gaga fans and discerning music lovers alike, were equally ecstatic that ‘Chromatica’ saw a return to the electro-pop days that catapulted Lady Gaga to international stardom in 2009. As expected, ‘Chromatica’ was streamed and downloaded millions of times over, resulting in the album debuting on the Billboard and Aria Charts, to name just a few, at number one this week. Now, you may be asking, ‘why are Behind The Decks writing about Lady Gaga?’ Well, you need just one look at the enviable list of co-producers to find some of the finest in the electronic music scene that helped create a well crafted Pop x EDM crossover.

In early May, we reported that Axwell had confirmed on Twitter that he was brought on by Gaga and BloodPop to produce three songs on ‘Chromatica’; ‘Alice’, ‘Free Woman’ and ‘Sine From Above’. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Axwell revealed that ‘Sine From Above’ was actually a song he had worked on seven years ago with Elton John in mind, but it had never progressed past the demo stage. We then fast forward to 2019; Axwell sends the ‘Sine From Above’ demo to Lady Gaga and co-writer Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic), and they all work their magic to turn an almost forgotten demo into what is a standout track on the album.

In the same Rolling Stone interview, Skrillex speaks about his contribution on ‘Chromatica’. Skrillex is a longtime fan of Gaga and had worked on previous projects with BloodPop, namely Justin Bieber’s album ‘Purpose’, so it wasn't a surprise to see him on this album. Skrillex co-produced the track ‘Plastic Doll’ telling Rolling Stone that “the track came together effortlessly as BloodPop and I have worked together many times before,” continuing to praise Gaga for giving her all on the track.

French DJ and producer, Tchami, had a particularly significant contribution to the album, co-producing four tracks. Tchami put some of his touches on album closers, ‘1000 Doves’ and ‘Babylon’. Most notable though, are his production credits on the first two singles to come from ‘Chromatica’. ‘Stupid love’ released in February as well as the Billboard number one song, ‘Rain On Me’ featuring Ariana Grande. Tchami thanked Gaga and BloodPop on the album release date.

DJ, producer and fellow Frenchman, Madeon, had already collaborated with Lady Gaga on the 2013 album, ‘Artpop’. Madeon returned on ‘Chromatica’ to add his touches to the track ‘911’ - a groovy progressive track, with hints of nu-disco.

‘Chromatica’ sees Lady Gaga take inspiration from the electronic music world. Gaga applies a layer of her pop sensibilities and infuses her personal narrative to produce a pop album that pays homage to the dance floor. Lady Gaga wants the world, despite the state in which it finds itself right now, to find some hope, to dance again and she has delivered the perfect soundtrack to make that happen.

‘Chromatica’ out now on Interscope, and can be found on Spotify below.
