Fentanyl, and how it is finding its way to Australia in party drugs.

Whether you like it or not, “Party” drugs are deeply ingrained into the music scene no matter if you are going to an EDM, Heavy Metal or Tay-Tay concert. Drugs are always going to be there.

I am ashamed to say that the view on party drugs among a vast majority of the Australian youth is one of not caring, or that it is cool to try and take as much as possible, or even having competitions to see who can do the most. This outlook on drugs needs to change for so many reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is the new opioid being found in party drugs, Fentanyl.

Fentanyl is responsible for 30,000 deaths between 2016 - 2018 in the USA alone.

Fentanyl was created as an alternative to morphine and is 50-100 times STRONGER than both heroin and morphine. It is faster acting than both, and while in extreme cases, such as prolonged surgeries (I.e. open heart, spinal and brain surgeries), or in the case of cancer patients, who when at times enduring extreme pain, can get a patch containing Fentanyl, I could stretch my mind to see an extreme use for it.

But on a whole, I cannot wrap my head around WHY we needed something this strong readily available.

This hardcore pain killer is now finding its way into party drugs, all thanks to the low cost of production and the fact that it is purely synthetic. Due to it being synthetic, it can be engineered as Fentanyl; or a million different derivatives, simply by changing 1 molecule of the chemical compound. This helps it move undetected all over the globe and it is currently being pumped out of Chinese labs at a staggering rate.

The product is then being shipped worldwide, to be used as everything from “genuine Fantayal” to cutter and binding agents in MDMA, Ecstasy (Pills), Cocaine and the most commonly Heroin. This has been happening for some time in the USA and parts of Europe.

Due to the massive rise in the use of the dark web, it is now finding its way to our shores.

I cannot stress enough as to how deadly this is, there is no chance of help,

You or your friend could (WILL) end up dead!

In my opinion, one of the biggest challenges we face in Australia is not only the lack of general knowledge when it comes to recreational drug use, but it’s also the lack of respect people have for the drugs they are taking. They think because a “mate” got them, it will be okay, yet where did their mate’s mate get them or their mate’s, mate’s, mate?
