One of the biggest mysteries of Tomorrowland this year has to be WTF happened between Tomorrowland, Swedish House Mafia and We 3 Legends. I will break it down with all the information I have.
Let's hope we can make some sense out of it.
When Tomorrowland announced they would have a surprise act closing out both weekends of their 15th birthday names started flying around. Hardwell, Pendulum, Knife Party, Skrillex, Avicii Hologram and yes We 3 Legends however, we all came back to the same name SHM.
None of us really knew it would be them at the time but it seemed to be the only act that made sense for such an occasion. Then they dropped the final lineup. No, Steve Angello or Seb Ingrosso, which made everyone even more sure it would be SHM. Added to this was a great little Easter Egg where if you press… fireworks go off all over your screen. I know what you are thinking, “That could stand for 3 Are Legend.” However, they have never gone by… but SHM has since day 1.
All my sources were telling me it was SHM even as far as saying Tomorrowland had already been to watch SHM to ensure that they still had the goods. The first weekend of Tomorrowland gets closer and closer and no one was expecting to hear anything about the surprise act until they were watching them on main stage.
Since Tomorrowland announced they would have a surprise act. There rumoured act (SHM) had canceled more shows than they had performed. I had heard that Tomorrowland where getting nervous about the booking and what would happen to their closing slots.
On the Wednesday before Weekend 1, out of the blue Tomorrowland drops into the lineup that 3 Are Legend would close weekend 1. To say people where upset about this was an understatement. What was stranger than the act itself was the way they did it? No build up, no real announcement, Just here it is, considering how long they made us wait for everything else this was very odd.
To make this happen, they had to change several acts around, including changing the closing act on DV&LM label stage Smash The House. DV&LM would now play the 10pm-11pm slot on their own stage and leaving closing duties to Wolfpack then run like hell to get too main stage and close weekend 1.
Add to this what could be the biggest dig at an act I have seen in a while when Dimitri Vegas got on the mic at the very end of their set and said.
“No matter what, what happens, when we get the call, we answer the call, we are here for you guys (referring to Tomorrowland) we fucking love you, Tomorrowland you are our home,”
then they drop “Save the world,” by SHM. Check it out below.

Since this has happened, we have seen several statements from the SHM boys. Interestingly, nothing from SHM management. Everything has been responses to questions on social media with NO official statement.
The one they seem to be saying the most is that they were already booked for the dates of both weekends of Tomorrowland. However, as you can see from the below that is not true, July 21st & 28th are wide open.
July 7 - Poland - Gdynia-Kosakowo Airport July 12 - Larvik Golfklubb, Norway - Stavernfestivalen July 12-14 - Split, Croatia - Ultra Europe (Performance Day TBA) - CANCELED July 19 - Helinski, Finland - Weekend Festival - CANCELED
July 26 - Ibiza, Spain - Ushuaïa We have also heard that they are not machines and there is only so many shows they can do. Well, for a booking few of around $5 MILLION AUD, I am sure you can have a red bull or two. They have also canceled more shows than they seem to play so they should be well rested.
WHAT I THINK HAPPENED
I think SHM where in fact, meant to be the surprise act for both weekends of Tomorrowland this year. Tomorrowland started to get nervous with all the of both the boys individual shows and there SHM shows. Tomorrowland then took it upon themselves to ensure that the show must go on and replaces SHM with 3 Are Legend. I am sure Tomorrowland took a hit to the wallet for this but they had to protect their brand and image and did not want to end up like Ultra Korea.
Personally I think we did not even need SHM to come back and I hate to say this but I really enjoyed 3 Are Legends set to end weekend 1.
